RASNOV Citadel
If you are on the way to visit Bran Castle, don't miss the Rasnov Citadel, proudly rising on the rocky hilltop in the Carpathian mountains.
Rasnov Citadel is the largest peasant fortification ever built in Eastern Europe. Because it was built to defend the local commoners from sieges it had a school, chapel, houses and other common buildings. There are about 20 houses inside, the remains of an old church and an incredible view of the city and its surroundings.
Due to the fact that the citadel has its own inner water source - a 143 m deep well, the refugees could face long sieges, and eventually the attackers gave up. Thus, Rasnov Citadel gained the name of unconquerable citadel. Today, travelers can visit a museum holding hundreds of year old weaponry, tools, books and clothing. One of its most known artifacts is a skeleton buried below a glass floor.
